Key Recovery Points

  • Ambulation – It is important to move around within three hours after returning to your room. The nurse will assist you in the beginning. Over time you will be able to do this independently. It is important to get up and walk about at least two to three times daily. The nursing staff will help you with getting out of bed and walking around. This activity is very important for your recovery.
  • Diet:
    • You will not be allowed to drink or eat anything for the first couple of days following surgery.
    • On the second day after surgery you will be given a tray of liquid. It will include water, broth, tea, and sugar free Jello. It is very important to drink only 30cc of liquid at a time every 15 minutes. Stop if you feel bloated or full.
    • You should be discharged from the hospital shortly after you can tolerate these liquids.
  • Incentive Spirometer – This is a device that helps your lungs to expand after surgery. Your nurses will show you how to use it once you wake up. It is recommended to do at least 10 deep breaths/hour.
