Before Surgery

Prior to bariatric surgery, there are a series of evaluations that need to be completed. The following checklist will help to ensure that each aspect of the preoperative evaluation is completed.

Before Surgery Checklist

  • Attend the Bariatric Surgery patient information session with the surgeon and the dietitian
  • Undergo preoperative surgical consultation and evaluation
  • Obtain preoperative medical and/or cardiology consultation for surgical clearance, if needed
  • Complete all special preoperative instructions
  • Obtain preoperative tests as indicated at the initial consultation
  • Attend pre-op dietary education class with registered dietitian/nutritionist
  • Undergo preoperative psychology screening and evaluation
  • Attend monthly support group meetings
  • Begin taking daily a multivitamin supplement
  • Purchase items needed for your post-op diet
  • Begin an exercise program
  • Begin incorporating lifestyle changes
  • Consider a smoking cessation program
