Post-operative Shopping List

Before surgery, a patient is given instructions for the type of diet that is appropriate for the first few weeks at home. It is very helpful to shop for this specialized diet before the surgery occurs.

Equipment needed:

  • Food diary
  • Pill crusher, if you are taking medications
  • Blender or food processor
  • Measuring cup set with 1/8 and 1/4 cups and tablespoons/teaspoons
  • Strainer
  • Food scale-suggested not required

Groceries:

  • Whey or soy protein powders (refer to list in diet instruction packet)
  • Carb Conscious Carnation Instant Breakfast-powder packets mixed with skim or 1% milk
  • Non-fat dry skim milk powder
  • Skim milk or 1% milk or soy milk
  • Fat free or low fat Lactaid milk for individuals with lactose intolerance
  • Decaffeinated coffee or tea
  • Non-calorie beverages
  • Bottled water (if preferred over tap water)
  • Sugar substitute
  • Sugar-free gelatin, sugar-free pudding or sugar-free ice Popsicles
  • Unsweentened 100 percent fruit juice or “lite” juice
  • Clear broth or bouillon
  • Cream based soups, made with allowed milk products and strained
  • Chewable multivitamins
  • Calcium citrate supplements (refer to list in diet instruction packet)
