Team Members

Surgery

Gary Korus, MD, FACS
Dr. Korus joined the Penn Faculty in 2004 after completing a fellowship in gastrointestinal surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He graduated from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and completed his surgical residency at the University of Rochester.

Dr. Korus has developed a multidisciplinary approach to the surgical treatment for obesity at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center as part of the Penn Bariatric Surgery Program. He also has clinical interests in diseases of the esophagus and stomach and in the application of minimally invasive techniques.

Julie Koehler
Julie is an experienced healthcare manager with more than 25 years experience in two major academic healthcare facilities in Philadelphia. She has worked at Penn for ten years working closely and collaboratively with surgeons, colleagues and staff managing the clinical ambulatory practices of the Department and most recently the Division of GI Surgery and the Bariatric Surgery Program.

She is responsible for all regulatory aspects of the Department of Surgery outpatient clinical operations including JCAHO and HIPAA standards. Julie obtained her master’s degree in business at LaSalle University and has served as President of the National Association of Academic Surgical Administrators.


Clinical Nutrition Support

Karen Mueller Buzby, RD
Karen is a Registered Dietitian with a certificate in Adult Weight Management from the American Dietetic Association. She is a graduate of Cornell University, receiving her Bachelor’s Degree in Human Nutrition and Dietetics and completing her Master’s course work in Clinical Nutrition.

Karen was employed previously by the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where she worked on the Nutritional Support Service with inpatients and outpatients requiring parenteral and enteral nutrition support. She has an interest in the nutrition requirements of the surgical patient and has published numerous articles on this topic. Karen is currently an outpatient Bariatric Clinical Dietitian Specialist working with Dr. Gary Korus at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center.


Administrative Assistant to Dr. Korus

Deborah Adcock
Debie has been employed at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center for many years working as the front desk coordinator in the Division of Gastroenterology and as the office coordinator in Primary Care. She is currently the Clinical Administrative Assistant for Dr. Gary Korus and the Bariatric Surgery Program at Penn Presbyterian. Debie’s extensive knowledge of scheduling and insurance requirements will help patients complete their surgical work-up in a timely manner.


The Bariatric Surgery Program at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center offers a multidisciplinary approach to patient care. In addition to surgery, nutrition and psychology, patients may be evaluated by healthcare professionals from the following departments or specialties:

  • clinical resource management/discharge planning
