Surgery Preparation

When considering bariatric surgery, patients should make sure all of their well-adult care is up-to-date. It is important for patients to begin to prepare for bariatric surgery by making healthy changes in their diet and lifestyle. The sooner this process begins, the better prepared patients will be for surgery.

Health changes to prepare for bariatric surgery include:

  • Smoking cessation (quitting)
  • Maintaining a healthy diet by eating foods low in fat and high in fiber
  • Eliminating fast food, fried foods and sugar-containing dessert foods
  • Drinking non-caloric or low calorie beverages
  • Decreasing consumption of carbonated beverages and caffeine
  • Start a walking program
  • Begin taking a daily multivitamin

These changes will help make the postoperative lifestyle and diet changes easier, and gives patients a head start for success after surgery. It is important to begin taking responsibility for a healthy lifestyle prior to the surgical procedure.

Prior to surgery, patients undergo surgical, medical, nutritional and psychological screenings. Each patient will also attend a preoperative nutrition class, which provides the patient with extensive diet education.
