Penn Lung Center Treatment
Options Proven Most Effective
Right now 35 million people are living with some form of America's third leading cause of death – chronic lung disease. At the University of Pennsylvania Health System, when it comes to the research and treatment of lung disease, we are experts.
The recently created Penn Lung Center
is home to one of the top-ranked lung
disease programs, ranked
11th in the country, but top in the region.*
From the lab to the operating room to the
bedside, we are working on a variety
of fronts:
Lung disease is a challenging disorder
to treat and much too complex to leave
to just one single discipline. That's
why, from routine screening to complex
procedures at all three hospitals, we bring the most experienced and highly
recognized professionals together.
Our thoracic surgeons, pathologists,
radiologists, pulmonologists, nurses
and researchers create a collaborative
culture that leads to not only better
communication but improved outcomes.
Shorter Hospital Stays |
Studies show that programs performing
more of these complex lung operations
have the best patient outcomes,
dramatically reducing the length of
hospital stays: 6 days at Penn, versus
the national average of 9 days.† This
is the foundation upon which Penn's
program is built.

A thoracic surgeon specializes solely in
treating diseases of the chest including
cancers of the lung, esophagus and chest
wall, congenital diseases and tumors
within the chest cavity. We have created
a dedicated team of these experts with
a single focus on diseases of the chest.
We were one of the first programs in
the nation to establish a formal division
of thoracic surgery. Today, we are one
of the largest thoracic surgery programs
in the country with seven experienced
thoracic surgeons. Surgeons who not
only developed lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS) for treating patients
with severe emphysema, but who have
performed more than 500 of these
operations, making them among the
most experienced teams in the world.
If you are experiencing lung or respiratory
problems, the Penn Lung Center should
be the first place you explore. Not only
have our thoracic surgeons performed
the world's first successful single and
bilateral lung transplants, but we have
also developed other procedures, like LVRS, that have become the standard for
hospitals and surgeons around the world.
Penn's lung transplantation team has
performed over 500 lung transplants and
is among the top ranked programs in the
country.†† It's no wonder we are the first
place you should turn to for answers.
