Heart, chest and lung surgery now offered at Penn Cardiac Care at Phoenixville Hospital

We are pleased to announce that Penn Cardiac Care at Phoenixville Hospital has expanded its services to include heart surgery. "This is a growing, thriving community and we believe it is important to provide more advanced heart care to the residents, such as bypass surgery, lung surgery, esophageal surgery and chest surgery," says Hans M. Haupt, MD, FACS, director of the cardiothoracic program.

"The availability of cardiothoracic surgery at Phoenixville Hospital permits the hospital to perform other diagnostic and interventional procedures. We treat most acute heart problems and blocked coronary arteries with medication, stents (a tiny metal device placed inside the artery to keep it open), drug-eluting stents, and balloon angioplasty (a procedure that involves threading a balloon-like device into blocked arteries to promote blood flow)," states Kathleen E. Magness, MD, an interventionalist and co-director of the catheterization laboratory at Phoenixville Hospital.

By choosing a hospital such as Phoenixville that offers angioplasty, the response time to open and unblock the patient's arteries is faster, thereby minimizing damage to the heart.

The cardiothoracic surgery program at Phoenixville Hospital offers on and off-pump bypass surgery, aortic aneurysm repair, and surgery for adult congenital heart disease, as well as the latest minimally invasive techniques for valve repair and replacement. These techniques typically translate into less blood loss, reduced pain and faster recovery periods for patients. Veins used for bypass operations are also harvested minimally invasively for improved patient comfort.

Penn Cardiac Care at Phoenixville Hospital can also provide advanced surgical treatment for lung cancer, including mediastinoscopy and pulmonary resections and esophageal surgery, including resection and treatment for esophageal cancer. "Patients were previously traveling to Philadelphia, Allentown or even Reading," says Dr. Haupt. "Now, we can better serve the community by providing the in-depth, sophisticated treatments patients need right here in Phoenixville."

For complex cases such as heart transplantation, Phoenixville Hospital also provides access to the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center-Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, one of the nation's best for heart transplantation.
