Penn Heart Rescue:
Rapid Referral for Cardiac Emergencies

Emergency referral to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center -- a regional referral center for cardiac care -- is now one phone call away thanks to the new Penn Heart Rescue Program. Designed to save patients' lives, Penn Heart Rescue offers easy access to critical heart care when time is of the essence.

Penn Heart Rescue quickly transports patients to the University of Pennsylvania Health System's (UPHS) Penn Presbyterian Medical Center via ambulance or PennSTAR emergency medical transportation helicopter. Upon arrival, patients receive treatment from the nation's leading specialists using the most advanced technologies in cardiac care, including cardiac catheterization, non-invasive evaluation, angioplasty and stents, or high-risk surgery. Patients experiencing cardiac emergencies no longer have to sacrifice quality of care for timely treatment—with just one phone call, Penn Heart Rescue connects critical patients with cardiac experts in minutes.

The Penn Heart Rescue team takes a comprehensive approach to treating cardiac emergencies to provide the highest quality of care. The team represents all departments that can help provide rapid, total care in emergency situations. Team members from cardiology, cardiovascular surgery, vascular medicine, pulmonary and critical care medicine and others are on hand 24 hours a day, seven days a week in catheterization laboratories and state-of-the-art surgical suites. After immediate evaluation and treatment, patients are returned to their local hospitals and physicians for continued care.

Penn Presbyterian physicians and staff have expertise in heart rhythm management, interventional cardiology, noninvasive cardiology and cardiac imaging, preventive cardiology, vascular medicine and peripheral vascular interventions, heart failure and women's heart health. In addition to routine heart operations, surgeons also perform coronary artery bypass in high-risk patients, complex aortic surgery, heart valve repair and minimally invasive robotic-assisted cardiac surgery.
