Electrophysiology Program

The Electrophysiology (EP) Program at Penn has a long history of collaboration with the Cardiovascular Surgical Program. Surgical therapy for curing ventricular tachycardia (“The Pennsylvania Peel”) was developed at Penn. The surgical ablation arm of the EP program remains strong with technology-driven atrial fibrillation ablation strategies providing patients undergoing valve repair and coronary artery bypass grafting an effective treatment.

Penn's EP team is advancing arrhythmia management by pioneering new catheterbased curative ablation techniques to eliminate VT and atrial fibrillation. The routine use of sophisticated imaging tools, ablation of complicated arrhythmia substrates and ground-breaking percutaneous epicardial mapping and ablation has established the program as an international patient referral and training center.

“Catheter ablative therapy, one of the latest treatments, has allowed us to provide long-term elimination of A-Fib and its associated severe symptoms – the majority of our patients no longer need antiarrhythmic drug therapy and have a dramatic improvement in their quality of life.”

Atrial Fibrillation Ablation Procedures

Clinical Trials

Medtronic Concomitant Utilization of Radio Frequency Energy for Atrial Fibrillation (CURE-AF) Trial CURE-AF Trial - Permanent Atrial Fibrillation CURE-AF Trial - Persistent Atrial Fibrillation

Penn's collective experience in the treatment of patients with AF culminated in our selection as the only center in the Philadelphia region (and one of only ten centers nationwide) to participate in this landmark clinical trial.

The purpose of the CURE-AF Trial is to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the Medtronic Cardioblate® Surgical Ablation System at reestablishing the normal heart rhythm in patients with permanent AF or persistent AF requiring concomitant open heart surgery utilizing the modified Cox Maze III procedure.

The trial population includes patients requiring valve replacements or repairs, atrial septal defect (ASD) repairs or coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) procedures.
