Beating Heart/Total Arterial
Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery Program
The Beating Heart and Total Arterial Coronary
Artery Bypass Surgery Program is staffed by a
team of dedicated cardiothoracic surgeons who
use the latest beating heart surgery and arterial
conduits for bypass techniques.
Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery and Valve
Surgery
Using state-of-the-art equipment and techniques,
Penn Cardiac Care cardiothoracic surgeons, with
the assistance of cardiac anesthesiologists and
specially trained nurses, perform bypass surgery
on a beating heart avoiding cardiopulmonary bypass.
Penn cardiothoracic physicians are also able to
perform:
- percutaneous
cardiopulmonary bypass during valvular surgery
- atrial septal defect closures
- mitral valve replacements
- aortic valve replacements
Patients that benefit from these procedures include:
- patients of all ages with coronary anatomy
suitable for beating heart surgery
- younger patients with a strong family history
of premature coronary
artery disease who may benefit from total
arterial coronary
bypass surgery
- older patients who have either had previous
LAD grafts, or have significant risk factors
for open heart surgery, such as:
- chronic renal insufficiency
- high stroke risk
- calcified aorta
- low ejection fraction
- previous carotid endarterectomy
- patients who want to minimize or completely
avoid the need for blood transfusions during
and after surgery
- patients who want faster recovery, less pain,
and more cosmetic incisions
- Not all patients are candidates for this type
of procedure, therefore be sure to speak to
your physician about this option
