Minimally Invasive Vein Harvesting Program

If you require bypass surgery, you can often avoid extra surgery by undergoing a minimally invasive harvesting of the leg vein used for the bypass. The safe and effective procedure, which uses only two tiny leg incisions and a telescope device, is much less painful and offers a quicker recovery than traditional vein harvesting surgery.

Unfortunately, not every patient is a candidate for this procedure. Patients who will not benefit from minimally invasive harvesting of the leg vein can have:

  • a history of varicose veins
  • small or thin legs
  • a superficial saphenous vein

Patients who are not candidates for leg vein harvesting may be candidates for arterial conduits for bypass grafting.

Be sure to speak to your Penn Cardiac Care doctor to see if you are a candidate for this type of procedure.
