Phototherapy Treatment Center
The Phototherapy Treatment Center offers state-of-the-art
treatment for chronic skin disorders such as
psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, and other light
responsive disorders. The Center, directed by Abby
Van Voorhees, MD and staffed by our premier
nursing staff, offers a broad range of ultraviolet
light services for our patients. Individual treatment
programs, education, and counseling is provided
in order to meet the needs of the individual
patient.
The Center offers a broad range of treatments
including:
Ultraviolet B Light (UVB)Therapy
Ultraviolet B light therapy is often utilized in the treatment of psoriasis
and other light responsive diseases. We offer treatment with both broad-band
UVB as well as the more powerful narrow-band UVB. The treatments are administered
in upright booths lined with fluorescent bulbs (picture). Your dermatologist
should decide which is the best method of treatment for you.
PUVA
PUVA utilizes ultraviolet light A in combination with psoralens. We offer the
ability to administer the psoralens either topically or orally. PUVA can
be used to treat psoriasis as well as other light responsive disorders. Treatments
can be given in both an upright booth to the entire body or limited to isolated
areas such as the hands and feet.
Scalp Treatment
Psoriasis of the scalp can be an especially troublesome condition. Using a
combination of therapies and excellent patient education this type of psoriasis
can be addressed.
Psoriasis Day Care Center
Patients with more severe psoriasis are often
referred to us for a more comprehensive treatment
in the Day Care Center at the Hospital of
the University of Pennsylvania. We are one
of very few centers nationally to
offer this level of intensive care to patients
with psoriasis. Treatments consist of
tar, narrow-band ultraviolet B therapy as
well as other topical agents and therapeutic
baths. Scalp treatments are also utilized
if needed. Each patient’s
management is individualized to achieve the best
result possible. The nursing staff provides
the care for all patients in a supportive
and educational setting. Between treatments,
patients can relax in our treatment suite
equipped with television, VCR, and kitchen
facilities. While participating
in the Day Care program, patients have the
option of commuting from their homes allowing
for minimal disruption in their family routines
or staying in the very convenient, adjacent,
on-site hotel at Penn Tower. Meals are provided.
