Swallowing Therapy

The team at Penn Center for Voice and Swallowing at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center has special expertise in treating swallowing disorders. Swallowing evaluations are recommended for patients who:

  • complain of difficulty or pain when swallowing liquids, food or medication
  • suffer from frequent choking during meals
  • have a history of acid reflux disease
  • have Parkinson’s disease, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis or ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease)
  • develop problems after sickness, surgery or changes in medication

Our Center offers complete diagnostic and treatment services for swallowing disorders including:

  • Electromyography of swallowing muscles
  • Fiberoptic endoscopicc evaluation of swallowing (FEES)
  • Flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing with sensory tesating (FEEESST)
  • In-office transnasal esophagiscopy (TNE)
