Healthy Living and Aging

As we age, inactive lifestyles and lack of motivation often lead to loss of mobility and greater risk of disease. It is important for seniors to stay motivated and adopt an “I can” motto for learning new and fun ways to stay healthy.

Physical Activity
You can adopt a healthier lifestyle today by doing the following:

  • Problem solve – discover what works for you by choosing something you like to do; include variety and explore new activities.
  • Consider your physical needs, fitness goals, lifestyle and interests; set achievable goals and find opportunities to be less sedentary.
  • Exercise with a friend – biking and swimming are good low-impact exercises.
  • Join a group at your church, senior center, recreation area or local YMCA.
  • Think about your daily and weekly schedule, and plan for opportunities to be more active; reward and acknowledge your efforts.

Focus on being active every day! Take the stairs when possible, walk instead of drive, choose the farthest parking spot, take a walk, stay off the couch, be active with your family, get on or off the bus several blocks away, take fitness breaks or dance to music. These simple lifestyle changes can help improve your health and overall outlook on life.

Mental Wellness
As we age, depression can be our greatest enemy. Inactivity often provokes this disease. An active and healthy lifestyle often works as an anti-depressant. Exercise your mind by doing any of the following:

  • Take a class that challenges you
  • Spend time with others and encourage discussion
  • Call a friend to chat and reminisce about the past
  • Find a hobby
  • Volunteer your services
  • Read

Social Wellness
Social well-being is very important for older adults. It is recommended to:

  • Keep in close contact with family and friends, and try to touch base with them daily.
  • Seek spiritual inspiration. Believing in a higher power has a tremendous impact on everyday life.
  • Travel and see the world. Traveling is a common hobby for those who are retired or soon approaching retirement.
  • See and experience new things when possible; always be open to leaving your “comfort zone” by seeking daily challenges.
  • Volunteer! Donate your time by volunteering your services to a local organization of interest.
  • Participate in games or shows that challenge your mind.
  • Never lose your sense of humor!

Financial Stability
It is important for those considering retirement to take a hard look at their financial well-being and goals for the future. Budgeting for the future is essential when approaching retirement. This process may take some time and dedication, but it is highly recommended when planning for a comfortable life after retirement.
