Penn to Sponsor the American Heart Association’s Start! Heart Walk 2008
The annual Start! Heart Walk will be held this year on Saturday, November 15 at Citizens Bank Park. Registration begins at 9 am, followed by the opening ceremony at 9:30 am, and the 5K walk at 10 am. There is no fee to join the event, but participants who raise at least $100 receive a Start! Heart Walk t-shirt, and additional prizes are awarded to those who raise over $250. The overall goal set for this year’s event by the AHA is $1 million; however, donations have already surpassed $600,000!
In 2007, Penn was among the largest teams represented at the event and raised $103,000 for programs and research devoted to finding better treatments and cures for heart disease and stroke. Michael Parmacek, MD, chief of cardiovascular medicine at the University of Pennsylvania Health System and director of the Penn Cardiovascular Institute, spoke at last year’s walk and encouraged those present to join the Start! movement and make a commitment to developing healthier lifestyles.
