The Albert J. Stunkard Weight Management Program
Losing weight and keeping it off is a struggle for many women. Maintaining a healthy weight takes consistent effort that often involves lifestyle changes. These changes can be big or small depending upon the amount of weight one has to lose.
David Sarwer, PhD, Director for The Albert J. Stunkard Weight Management Program at the University of Pennsylvania Health System warns against fad and crash diets. Dr. Sarwer said: “Some promoters of quick weight loss methods would like you to believe that once you lose weight, your work is done. A quick weight loss program may help you to slim down initially but without making permanent changes to your eating habits and lifestyle, you will likely regain the weight quickly.”
He continues: “To lose weight, you must reduce your caloric intake and increase your activity level. Weight loss programs can help people change these behaviors for the long term. The best ones offer the patient a customized treatment plan specific to each person’s weight and health needs.”
The Stunkard Weight Management Program, part of Penn Behavioral Health, is a comprehensive program that teaches patients how to modify their behavior to lose weight and maintain healthy habits. Program clinicians assess a patient’s health and wellness goals, and review eating and exercise habits.
Patients within the program receive nutrition counseling including an individually designed balanced diet, assistance in planning meals for successful and healthy weight loss and access to ongoing support programs.
Current group treatment programs include:
- Health First Program - Health First is a medically supervised program designed to achieve maximum weight reduction and improve cardiovascular health. This program combines the use of meal replacements with prepared, wholesome entrees, and fresh fruits and vegetables.
- Penn Start Program - Penn Start is a 14-week lifestyle intervention designed to promote slow and steady weight loss. Participants consume a diet of conventional foods and lose weight by reducing calories and increasing physical activity.
