Laparoscopic Surgery
Many years ago, treatments for some gynecologic
problems involved surgery that required large
incisions, which led to more bleeding, a longer
healing period and a greater risk for complications.
Penn physicians from the Penn
Center for Reproductive Medicine and Surgery
have been responsible for many of the new developments
in the field of reproductive surgery. Our specialists
are experts in minimally invasive surgery such
as laparoscopic surgery, and advanced laser surgery.
These techniques avoid the need for a major abdominal
incision, making your recovery period shorter
and less painful.
These surgical procedures are used to treat conditions
such as endometriosis,
pelvic pain, ectopic
pregnancy, uterine
fibroids, and blocked fallopian tubes. Laparoscopic
surgery is also available for the treatment of
a variety of conditions including hysterectomy,
ovarian cyst removal and bladder repair.
In partnership with Penn's Division of Interventional
Radiology, the Center also offers one of the newest
treatments for fibroids, uterine
artery embolization.
