Giving Opportunities/Current Projects

Gifts to Scheie can be made in a variety of ways and can be directed to the program of your choice, or to support the research of a particular physician or scientist. Every gift leads us a step closer to our goal of finding a treatment or cure for blindness and vision loss. All gifts to Scheie Eye Institute are welcomed and appreciated.

List of Giving Opportunities

Unrestricted Gifts allow the department Chair to direct the funds to where they are most needed.

Endowments and Professorships - Contributions that form the basis of endowments last in perpetuity and may support a specific area of research or a named professorship.

Education - Contributions support lectureships or educational facilities, such as computer learning, medical libraries or classrooms. An example is the David Kozart Memorial Fund which supports Resident education through an annual clinical conference.

Tradition of Giving at Scheie
The Scheie Eye Institute was the culmination of a dream by Harold G. Scheie for a facility devoted exclusively to ophthalmology. Dr. Scheie raised funds for an independently financed eye institute that was built on the Presbyterian Hospital campus. His fundraising efforts met with enormous success; he raised over $9 million for the building, and in 1972, the Scheie Eye Institute was dedicated.

Dr. Scheie continued to fundraise for an endowment to support the department in the future. At the time of his death, the endowment was worth over $40 million.
