Gastrointestinal (GI) Medicine
Opening September 2008
Penn gastroenterologists have pioneered advances
within the field of GI medicine and provide many
options in detecting and treating the myriad
of diseases that can affect the human digestive
tract. Experience in both patient care and research
allows them to provide expert care for everyone,
including people with complicated medical conditions
or risk factors.
At the Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine,
all of Penn's gastroenterology team
will be located in the same place, allowing patients
to move easily from one area and one appointment
to the next. Specialists in gastroenterology,
gastrointestinal surgery, medical oncology, radiation
oncology and pathology, along with nursing and
nutritional staff will work together to develop
a full treatment plan for patients. And beginning
in 2009, the Roberts
Proton Therapy Center – the
largest proton therapy center in the world – will
begin operation, providing another way to innovatively
treat GI cancer.
Along with treatment and diagnosis, Penn gastroenterology's
genetics clinic provides testing and counseling
of people who are at high risk of developing
GI cancer. Genetics counselors in the program
work with patients to reduce their risk of developing
future cancers.
In addition, Penn GI Medicine provides state-of-the-art
care for conditions such as:
