PennSTAR Flight
The PennSTAR Flight program provides
critical care air medical transportation within a 100-mile
radius of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
Mission types include the transport of critical care patients
from hospitals to tertiary medical centers, as well as "on-scene" responses
to the site of accidents and trauma-related incidents.
PennSTAR provides rapid transport of the following critical
care patients: trauma, head and spinal injuries, cardiac,
medical, pulmonary, surgical, high-risk OB, and neonatal emergencies.
Support is also provided to organ transplant teams and in
major disaster situations.
The PennSTAR Flight Team is available 24 hours a day throughout
the year. The MBB-BK-117 "Space Ship" is capable
of carrying two patients and is equipped with the latest
critical care equipment to provide full patient support
while in flight. A dedicated communications center, PENNCOMM,
is located adjacent to the rooftop helideck. This center
coordinates all transport requests and assists referring
physicians in locating a HUP specialist to accept their
patient.
PENNCOMM also supports communications between the
nursing units of the referring and receiving hospitals
and/or the helicopter and these units. The Flight Team
consists of a pilot and a specially trained flight paramedic
and flight nurse. The Flight Team allows for rapid stabilization
of critical care air transport to other health care centers
in the region, and to The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
