Ultrasound at Pennsylvania Hospital

Ultrasound (also called ultrasonography) is a way for doctors and medical personnel to look at or image the body. Instead of radiation, ultrasound uses sound waves to provide an internal image (called a sonogram) of the body. The procedure is safe for patients and when used during pregnancy, for fetuses in the womb. The use and technique of ultrasound depends on which organ is being viewed. Therefore preparation instructions from your provider may vary.

Ultrasound takes pictures of different “sections" or "slices” throughout the body by using a probe (transducer) which slides over the skin. Ultrasound can also be used to check blood flow and blood vessels by using the Doppler technique. This technique is also safe for patients.

All the images taken during ultrasound are displayed on monitors for the patients to view instantaneously and are filed on disk or film for future access if needed.
