Genitourinary Radiology Division
The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania
is the only academic medical center in the Philadelphia
region with the clinical expertise and depth
to support a separate Genitourinary (GU) Radiology
Division. Members of the GU division perform
a wide variety of diagnostic and interventional
procedures for patients with known or suspected
genitourinary diseases.
The division's
faculty provides consultations and assist in
coordination of imaging studies performed at
hospitals throughout the University of Pennsylvania
Health System and other hospitals and imaging
centers in the Philadelphia metropolitan area.
The radiologists and staff within the division
conduct diagnostic imaging studies to evaluate
the anatomy and function of upper and lower urinary
tracts including the kidneys, ureters, bladder
and urethra in patients with:
- hematuria or blood in the urine.
- malignancies, known or suspected.
- urinary stone disease.
- urinary fistulas.
- voiding dysfunction.
The GU Division works in conjunction with the
Divisions of Urology and Urogynecology on a state-of-the-art
program to evaluate and treat urinary incontinence
and other urination abnormalities. In addition,
the radiologists within the division perform procedures
for women with infertility including diagnostic
(hysterosalpinogography) and interventional (fallopian
tube recanalization).
The GU Division pioneered the development of
interventional uroradiology more than 20 years
ago and continues to perform a wide variety of
non-vascular interventional procedures for patients
with their own or with transplanted kidneys. These
procedures include:
- percutaneous nephrostomy.
- ureteral stent placement and removal.
- dilation of urinary tract narrowings or strictures.
- ablation or obliteration of cysts and other
fluid collections in or around the kidney including
lymphoceles.
- non-surgical interventional procedures related
to urinary tract stone disease.
