Colorectal Surgery
Penn colorectal surgeons are highly experienced
and committed to providing the entire spectrum
of care for their patients. Dedicated to the
assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of disorders
of the colon, rectum, and anus our surgeons strive
to deliver high-quality, cost-effective medical
care with dignity and compassion. Our multidisciplinary
approach enables us to work as a team, providing
patients with the expert care they need at this
crucial time.
Our primary focus is the diagnosis and treatment
of diseases arising in the anus, rectum, and
large bowel (colon). We treat patients with diverse
problems, including colon, rectal, and anal cancer,
inflammatory
bowel disease (Crohn's and ulcerative
colitis), diverticular disease, problems with
fecal incontinence
and prolapse, as well as hemorrhoids,
fissures, and fistulas.
The Latest Procedures and Techniques
At Penn, our expertise and commitment to our
patients distinguishes us among the world's best
surgeons. Our pioneering work in surgical techniques
and procedures assists us in finding what works
best for each patient's individual condition. Offering
patients superior surgical care is what we do,
all day, every day, with our:
- Multidisciplinary approach for the treatment
of rectal cancer, with an emphasis on sphincter
preservation.
- Surgical treatment of inflammatory
bowel disease, in collaboration with physicians in
the division of gastroenterology, including
continence-preserving restorative proctocolectomy
and ileal pouch anal anastomosis for ulcerative
colitis.
- Treatment of pelvic floor disorders, including
urinary and fecal incontinence, rectal prolapse
and constipation, in collaboration with members
of the division of urogynecology and urology.
- Surgical treatment for diverticulitis and
diverticular disease.
- Treatment of anorectal disease, including
anal fistulas, fissures and hemorrhoids.
- Minimally
invasive surgery (laparoscopic
or “keyhole” surgery) for benign
and malignant diseases of the colon and rectum.
- Screening for colorectal cancer, including
patients with a family history of colorectal
