About the Heart Transplant Program

The Penn Transplant Institute’s cardiac transplant program is the largest in the region. It is also ranked in the top 10 programs in the country. Our outcomes surpass the national average. Potential heart transplant candidates are evaluated and followed by a team of specially trained cardiologists, surgeons, pulmonologists, nurses, psychiatrists, and rehabilitation specialists.

The Transplant Institute works closely with the regional organ procurement organization, the Gift of Life, the largest organ procurement organization in the country. The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania is also an approved member of UNOS. Teamed with UNOS and the Gift of Life, the Penn heart transplant team is dedicated to increasing awareness of the need for organ and tissue donation both on campus and in the community.

Our Transplant Institute has an active team of researchers and participates in many clinical trials. These include the investigation of new immunosuppressive drugs and therapies, as well as evaluations of new combinations of drugs and therapies. Penn is at the forefront of research to develop the field of xenotransplantation.

We also offer financial counseling, support groups and social services to our heart transplant patients. Choosing whether or not to undergo a heart transplant is a major life decision. This site is meant to give you more information about heart transplantation in order to help you and your family make a decision that is right for you.
