About the Kidney Transplant Program
Highlights of the Penn Kidney Transplant Program:
- Penn has the largest and most experienced
renal (kidney) program in the Delaware Valley.
- We perform approximately 180 renal transplants
each year. Since the program's inception in
1966, we have performed over 3,300 transplants.
- Our program ranks in the top 10% of the 200
kidney transplantation programs nationwide.
- Penn has consistently achieved superior
transplant survival rates in the Delaware
Valley, with results significantly exceeding
national averages.
- Penn has the largest and most experienced
Living Donor Program.
Our first live donor transplant, performed in
1966, still has his original kidney transplant,
making him one of the longest surviving kidney
transplant recipients in the nation.
- Penn is at the forefront of transplantation
technology. We are the first transplant center
in the Delaware Valley to perform laparoscopic
kidney donor surgery (also called laparoscopic
nephrectomy) via robotics. This less invasive
procedure makes more kidneys available for patients
who need them.
- Joint program with The
Children's Hospital of Philadelphia for
living-related donor transplant.
- Most experienced in the region with multi-organ
transplants (heart-kidney, liver-kidney, etc.).
- Penn is one of the few funded transplant centers
in the country approved to pioneer islet cell
transplantation for those with severe, brittle
Type I diabetes.
